- Dracula, castles, bats
- Exclusive for us: the famous Transalpina
- Transfagarasan route
- Our Club Member Kuba’s vineyard
- 6 days / 875 miles
- Start: Cluj-Napoca / Finish: Bucharest
Romania. A little-known country, yet alluring in its mystery. It entices but also intimidates. It’s better to explore it in a trusted group… Even better with a local host. Our Club Member Kuba owns a vineyard in Transylvania. He will show us a Romania that cannot be found through travel agencies. After enjoying his excellent Chardonnay, we will set off on a route that starts with an exclusive section of the Transalpina closed just for us (thanks to Kuba). Then, like in Hitchcock’s movies, the attractions will intensify.
Nature of the Trip
- Discover Romania with a local guide
- GT Expedition – traveling from place to place
- Experience Transylvanian wines
- Famous high mountain roads: Transfagarasan and Transalpina
- Interesting, varied hotels, each with a different style
- Everything organized, worry-free
- Luggage transport vehicle
- Road scout
How it works?
We travel in several small groups, guided by pace cars. Each day we have a different route. We start after breakfast, with leisurely lunches and stops to exchange impressions (coffee, viewpoints). We combine sections designed for driving sports cars with unforgettable views. A scout goes ahead of us to provide current information. On some days, you have an option of a shorter route for longer relaxation. Evenings are dedicated to feasting, getting to know regional cuisine and wine. On the route, you only have your carry-on luggage – heavier bags are transported directly to the hotel by bus.
Hotels
We care about diversity and contrasts. One night in a vineyard, the next in a ski resort as if stolen Tyrol. In a peaceful setting by lakes – and in the exciting atmosphere of downtown Bucharest on a summer weekend.
Roads
The main focus is on two high mountain roads. The iconic Transfagarasan, popular among ambitious drivers, was created in 1970s as a strategic route, at the request of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. Its highest point exceeds 2,000 meters above sea level, and the descent winding along the slope of a glacial valley is one of the most photographed roads in the world. The Transalpina, older by two millennia and once used as a corridor for Roman legions, climbs with its smooth, winding asphalt even higher, revealing fascinating high mountain panoramas. We will have a thirty-kilometer section of the Transalpina closed exclusively for us for an hour. The remaining routes are chosen to provide maximum driving pleasure and views – sunny highlands, vineyards, expansive sheep pastures, and lakes.
Cuisine and Wine
Culinary adventures in Transylvania will reveal the combination of solid Carpathian cuisine with southern lightness and aroma. We focus on simple and traditional flavors of meats, vegetables, and cheeses – without Michelin star’s pretentiousness. We will find that white Traminers, Rieslings, and Pinots from around Sighișoara rival German and Austrian wines, and the red, endemic Feteasca Neagra, only due to its limited hand production has not conquered foreign markets. All the more reason to know them.
Attractions
Kuba’s vineyard in Transylvania and its outstanding white Chardonnay. Discussions with Kuba about doing business in Romania. Closed section of the Transalpina. Dracula’s castle. The Transfagarasan route, known from TopGear. Half a day for a walk, cable car ride, and lunch in the picturesque, charming Brasov at the halfway point. In Bucharest, we will visit the remarkable car collection of Ion Tiriac. Saturday night in the capital of Romania will be enjoyed in an exclusive club, reserved only for selected guests, to celebrate the end of the route with a party until dawn.
